Always higher, always further … And If we travel ?
The movie is about the improvement of aviation during the Second World War.
So I am curious to know how the means of transport evolved and since when some of them exist.
In the manga "Memories of Vanitas" there is a drawing of a dirigible called La Baleine, this machine makes you dream.
Yes, it really existed !
Its first flight took place in 1852. This incredible means of locomotion covered 27 km. while not being able to move at more than 10 km per hour. Invented after the hot-air balloon, the airship is easier to navigate than the hot-air balloon. The dirigeable was invented by Henri Giffard.
Henri Giffard was a French researcher of air navigation, passionate about locomotives. He was born in 1825 and died in 1882.
The airship can fly thanks to a steam engine that drives a propeller in the center of the device.
It remains impressive by its size. One may wonder how something so big can fly ? But that's another story.
The inventor of the airship being passionate about locomotives, why not about knowing more?
The steam locomotive was functional from 1804 until the 1950s. Designed in England by Richard Trevithick.
The locomotive was used for a long time in some countries where coal was cheap and abundant. It was also used in mountainous areas for reasons of atmospheric pressure.
This device has known many evolutions, and I appreciate it for its charm (it remains very noisy and less comfortable than the train nowadays).
The first prototypes that allow man to fly were invented by Clement Ader in 1870 during the war.
But the reliable motorized airplane designed by the Wright brothers made its first successful flight in 1903. This milestone marked the beginning of aviation even if it did not score at the time. Then the aircraft went through many evolutions, especially for military purposes during the Second World War.
In Japan, Jirô (the aeronautical engineer) contributed to this evolution by designing the Japanese bombers after several trips to Europe.
We noticed that since the 70's there is not much evolution in trains and aviation (few people could see an airship today).
In retrospect, we can see that society is evolving very quickly, especially for our generation. Internet, artificial intelligence, robots, more and more powerful devices, ...
But since the 2000s, we have seen less Progress in the means of transport compared to the last century. Except for the shift to less polluting vehicles, hybrid or electric models, or faster trains. In 2019, in Japan, the first train that can reach 400km/h ran.
In terms of traditional means of transportation such as trains or planes, Progress seems to have stagnated in terms of comfort.
I am still amazed at each trip, and to see these devices in operation. Progress never stops, I am curious to see what could be invented in the future to travel in an unusual way.
Man always ends up reaching his dreams.
